PESHAWAR: Pacers Riaz Afridi, Waqar Ahmad and Afaq Khan led Peshawar Region to restrict star-studded Sui Northern Gas Pipe Line (SNGPL) to 202 runs all out on the opening day of the five-day final of Qauid-e-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship (Division-II), which got under way here at Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
Test pacer Raiz Afridi was the pick of the pack as he took the first wicket of SNGPL opener Nadeem-ul-Haq for no score in his very first over and took three more wickets of star batsman Umar Akmal, Yasir Shah and Muhammad Owais by creating a panic like situation in the rank of the rivals. Riaz recorded an excellent figures of four wickets for 55 runs in his 21.2 overs, out of five were maiden.
With a furious bowling, Riaz was greatly supported by Waqar Ahmad on the other end, who finished the day with his excellent figures of 3 wickets for 80 runs in his 21 overs and Afaq claimed three wickets for 48 runs in his 11 overs spell.
Earlier, SNGPL won the toss and elected to bat first with middle order Usman was the prominent contributor who made 41 runs off 59 balls while staying for 99 minutes at the crease with six boundaries. Muhammad Owais made 37 runs with five boundaries and one six, Azeem scored 25 runs off 59 balls, Ali Waqas scored 37 runs off 80 balls with four six boundaries and Khurram Shehzad made 30 runs off 23 balls with one boundary. Umar Akmal scored just 7 runs with one boundary off facing 23 balls.
Thus SNGPL made 202 runs all out in their first innings after playing 56.2 overs. For Peshawar Region Riaz Afridi claimed four wickets for 55 runs, Waqar Ahmad took three wickets for 80 runs, Afaq Ahmad took three for 48 runs.
In response to 202 runs, Peshawar in their first innings was on 85 for 2 after playing 14 overs. When the bails were off on the opening day opener Muhammad Fayyaz was not out on 43 who added six boundaries after playing 56 balls and Sajjad Ahmad Jan was batting on 1.
Israullah scored 36 runs with five boundaries and Iftikhar Ahamd gone for no score. For SNGPL Bilawal Bhati took two wickets for 35 runs.
