SRINAGAR: At least 20 people were killed Friday when a passenger mini bus they were traveling in skidded off the road and fell into a gorge in Indian-occupied Kashmir, officials said.
The accident took place Friday morning at Bhatyas in Doda district, 175 km northeast of Jammu, the winter capital of Indian- controlled Kashmir.
"We have come to know that 19 people were killed and one person was seriously injured in an accident today in Doda district," said Heemat Kumar Lohia, region’s Inspector General of Traffic Police.
"All the bodies have been retrieved and injured person has been hospitalized,"Heemat Kumar Lohia said.
According to officials, the ill-fated vehicle was on way from Gandoh to Thatri, when it fell into a deep gorge.
No sooner the news about accident spread, locals and policemen rushed to the spot to carry out rescue work.
The health officials pressed in ambulances to carry dead to the hospital, officials said.
Police said the driver of the vehicle lost control while negotiating a sharp curve on the road.
Deadly road accidents are common in this mountainous region often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
