Thousands rallied in Colombo against NATO attacks

COLOMBO: Thousands Friday rallied against the last month’s NATO attack on Pakistan’s military check posts, which had killed 24 soldiers and injured 13.

The Sri Lanka Pakistan Friendship Association organized the demonstration after Juma prayers outside the Devatagagha mosque in Town Hall.

The demonstrators condemned the blatant NATO/US-ISAF aggression and the unprovoked attacks and called for impartial inquiry.

The Governor Western Province Hon Alvi Maulana, Several Government Ministers including Minister Mervin De Silva, Deputy Mayor of Colombo Municipality and several high profile personalities participated in the peaceful protest against the blatant violation of Pakistan’s air and ground space. The protest was organized by the Pakistan Sri Lanka Friendship Association, several Political parties and the Pakistani Community in Sri Lanka.

People from all communities of Sri Lanka hailing from various walks of life and from all over the country gathered in an exceptional display of Solidarity towards a Friendly country- Pakistan- which has assisted Sri Lanka in its testing times throughout its history.

The organizers of the demonstration Pakistan Sri Lanka Friendship Association, Ministers and Representatives of the political parties addressed protesters and called for a resolute stand against the aggression. Speaker termed the blatant NATO attack as aggression and terrorism and appealed to the international community to stop such violations.

Thousands of people including journalists, government employees, lawyers and members of civil society gathered near the sprawling Colombo Municipal Council building complex and denounced the unprovoked NATO/US-ISAF attacks that had resulted in the deaths of over two-dozen Pakistani soldiers. “Stop terrorizing Pakistan,” the protestors asked the US and NATO.

The speakers of the rally were of the opinion that the US had begun an undeclared war on Pakistan and its drones had killed thousands of innocent citizens in tribal areas in the name of collateral damages. Meanwhile, different civil society organizations and unions joined the peaceful rally and recorded their protest against the Nato attacks. A heavy contingent of police provided security to the protesters and no unwanted incident took place throughout the protest.

The demonstrators called the double standard strategy in targeting Muslim Nations while showing a blind eye to its own perpetrations. They also highlighted that US is pressing Sri Lanka to inquire into the just ended 30 year old civil war, where the Sri Lankan government justifiably used its resources to crush and get rid of one of the ruthless enemy of the humanity LTTE, while on the other hand they are killing the innocent people in the name of democracy and Peace. The Channel – 4 documentaries which were a pseudo production of LTTE and its western backers, seems to have tacit support of the United States.

On one hand the West is bullying Sri Lanka over its ambitious and successful war against terror, while on the other hand the US itself is covertly and overtly decimating innocent people throughout the world by concocting ‘terrorism theory” for their blatant violation of sovereign nations.
