Britney, the most followed on Google+

WASHINGTON: Britney Spears has pushed Google CEO Larry Page out of the top spot on social media site Google+, ending the reign of technology elites on the newly minted social network, a report by Relaxnews said.

According to the Next Web-created Google+ statistics counter, Britney Spears has accumulated 743,179 followers. Larry Page was just behind with 742,492 followers on the morning of November 24.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg -- who once held the elusive top spot on Google+ (G+) despite never posting on the social network publicly -- has slipped into fourth place.

Since launching in July Google+ has been home to technology journalists and early adopters, however, over the last few months celebrities have started to join the site and are quickly climbing their way up the list of most followed users.

US President Barack Obama made his Google+ debut on November 23 but he is keeping his follower count hidden from public view. He is the sixth most followed person on Twitter with 11.3 million fans and the 40th most followed person on Facebook with 24.1 million fans.
